Pushpay Review: Is It Worth the Cost for Your Church?
Pushpay is one of the most recognizable names in church online giving.
It built its reputation by making mobile giving quick, easy, and polished. At a time when many church donation pages were frustrating to use on a phone, Pushpay helped churches create a much better donor experience.
Today, Pushpay offers much more than a donation form. Its broader platform can include digital giving, donor management, church management, reporting, engagement tools, and a mobile church app.
But all of those capabilities come at a price.
Pushpay is generally positioned as a premium church technology platform. That raises the most important question for pastors and church leaders:
Does Pushpay help your church raise and retain enough additional giving to justify its cost?
In the video below, I share my honest Pushpay review based on years of working with churches, ministries, online giving systems, and fundraising technology.
What Is Pushpay?
Pushpay is a digital giving and church engagement platform created primarily for churches and faith-based organizations.
Depending on the package your church purchases, Pushpay can help with:
- Online and mobile giving
- Recurring donations
- Text giving
- Donor records
- Giving statements
- Financial reporting
- Donor communication
- Church management
- Ministry engagement
- Custom church apps
- Event registration
- Group communication
- Congregation analytics
Pushpay’s original strength was the giving experience. The company has since expanded into a larger church technology ecosystem.
That can be appealing to churches that want several ministry functions connected through one provider.
It may be less appealing to churches that only need an affordable and dependable way to accept online gifts.
What Pushpay Does Well
Pushpay Offers an Excellent Mobile Giving Experience
This is probably Pushpay’s greatest strength.
The donation process is designed around the way people actually give today, which is increasingly through a phone.
A good mobile giving experience should:
- Load quickly
- Require as few steps as possible
- Be easy to understand
- Make recurring giving simple
- Remember returning donors
- Reduce unnecessary form fields
- Build confidence in the transaction
Pushpay has long understood that every additional step in a donation process creates another opportunity for someone to stop.
That matters.
A church can have excellent preaching, a compelling mission, and a congregation that wants to give, but still lose gifts because its donation experience is confusing.
Pushpay generally does a good job reducing that friction.
Recurring Giving Is Easy to Establish
Recurring donors are extremely valuable to a church.
They create more predictable income, reduce seasonal fluctuations, and allow ministry leaders to plan with greater confidence.
Pushpay makes it easy for donors to select a recurring gift and manage their giving preferences.
This is more important than simply having a recurring-giving checkbox.
The wording, placement, timing, and overall experience can all influence whether someone chooses to give once or establish an ongoing commitment.
Pushpay has built much of its platform around helping churches move donors toward consistent digital giving.
The Giving Experience Feels Professional
Your giving page communicates something about your church.
A dated, confusing, or poorly branded form can make donors hesitate. A polished giving experience can reassure them that their information is secure and that the church handles donations responsibly.
Pushpay can provide a professional experience that feels consistent with the church’s identity.
For large churches with strong branding, that consistency may be particularly valuable.
Reporting and Donor Information Can Be Valuable
Pushpay provides churches with tools for tracking gifts, recurring donors, funds, campaigns, and giving activity.
The value of that data depends on whether the church actually uses it.
A church should be able to answer questions such as:
- How many households gave this year?
- How many donors are giving for the first time?
- How many first-time donors gave again?
- How many recurring donors stopped giving?
- Which donors increased or decreased their support?
- How much giving comes through mobile devices?
- Which funds or campaigns are gaining support?
- Are donors covering transaction costs?
- What percentage of total giving is digital?
Pushpay can help churches collect and organize much of this information.
But software does not automatically create a generosity strategy.
Someone must review the reports, identify meaningful changes, and respond appropriately.
It Can Connect Giving With Broader Church Engagement
Pushpay has expanded beyond giving into church management and engagement.
Depending on your church’s setup, this may allow giving records to connect with member profiles, attendance, groups, communications, events, and other ministry activities.
This can give church leaders a more complete understanding of engagement.
However, churches should be careful about how they interpret this information.
Giving data can help identify patterns, but it should never become a scorecard for someone’s spiritual maturity. The goal should be better pastoral care and more thoughtful communication, not reducing people to financial records.
Where Pushpay May Fall Short
Pushpay Can Be Expensive
Cost is the most common concern surrounding Pushpay.
The company generally uses customized pricing based on the church, selected features, and package. Churches may pay for the platform in addition to payment-processing costs and optional products.
The total cost can include:
- A monthly or annual platform subscription
- Credit and debit card processing
- ACH or bank-transfer fees
- Setup or implementation
- A church app
- Church management tools
- Communication features
- Additional support or services
- Contract commitments
That does not automatically mean Pushpay is overpriced.
A more expensive platform can still be the better financial decision if it increases recurring giving, improves donor retention, reduces administrative work, and replaces other software.
But churches should ask Pushpay to demonstrate the value rather than simply presenting a long feature list.
Pricing Is Not Immediately Transparent
Church leaders generally cannot visit the Pushpay website, select a complete package, and calculate the exact total cost without speaking with the sales team.
That makes it difficult to compare Pushpay directly with systems that publish their prices.
Before agreeing to a demonstration or signing a contract, ask for a complete written proposal that includes:
- Platform costs
- Processing rates
- ACH fees
- Setup fees
- App costs
- Required modules
- Optional modules
- Contract length
- Renewal terms
- Price-increase provisions
- Cancellation terms
- Data-export procedures
You should understand the full cost over the entire contract period, not merely the introductory monthly price.
The Contract Requires Careful Review
Pushpay plans may involve annual agreements or other contractual commitments.
Church leaders should understand when the agreement renews, when cancellation notice must be given, and whether pricing changes at renewal.
Do not rely only on a verbal conversation with a salesperson.
Ask for every important promise, discount, feature, processing rate, and renewal condition in writing.
Before signing, identify the exact date by which the church must provide notice if it chooses not to renew.
Then put that date on the church calendar.
Smaller Churches May Not Need the Full Platform
Pushpay may be a strong fit for a large church receiving substantial digital giving.
It may not make financial sense for a smaller church that needs only a basic donation form and simple donor records.
A small or midsized church should calculate:
- Its annual Pushpay platform cost
- Its estimated annual processing fees
- The staff time required to manage it
- The cost of any additional software it will still need
- The measurable benefit Pushpay is expected to produce
If the church pays thousands of dollars each year for features it rarely uses, a simpler platform may be more appropriate.
A Branded App Is Not Automatically an Engagement Strategy
Church apps can be useful, but churches sometimes overestimate their value.
Having an app does not guarantee that people will download it, keep it, open it, or respond to notifications.
Before paying for a branded church app, ask:
- What problem will the app solve?
- How many people are likely to install it?
- What will make them open it regularly?
- Who will keep the content current?
- Does it replace another expense?
- Could the same goal be accomplished through the website, email, or text messaging?
- How will the church measure its usefulness?
A church app should support an existing communication strategy. It cannot create one by itself.
Pushpay Pricing: What Should Churches Expect?
Pushpay does not publish one universal price that applies to every church.
Pricing may depend on factors such as:
- Church size
- Giving volume
- Selected products
- Church management requirements
- App features
- Communication tools
- Implementation needs
- Contract terms
Because pricing can change and individual churches may receive different proposals, I would not rely on an old online review to determine your expected cost.
Request a current written quote directly from Pushpay.
Then compare that quote with at least two competing platforms using the same requirements.
Do not compare a complete Pushpay package with the entry-level price of another provider. Make sure each proposal includes the actual features your church needs.
Questions to Ask During a Pushpay Demonstration
A software demonstration is designed to show the product at its best.
Your job is to determine how it will work in your church’s actual environment.
Ask questions such as:
About the Donor Experience
- How many steps are required for a first-time gift?
- How does the process work on a phone?
- Can donors give without creating an account?
- How are recurring gifts established and managed?
- Can donors easily update an expired card?
- What happens when a recurring payment fails?
- Can donors cover processing costs?
- Can the giving form match our church branding?
- Is giving available in multiple languages?
About Costs
- What is the total annual platform cost?
- Are there setup or implementation fees?
- What are the card-processing rates?
- What are the ACH fees?
- Are there separate fees for American Express?
- Which features cost extra?
- Does the price increase at renewal?
- Is there a minimum contract term?
- Are there early-termination penalties?
About Data
- Can we export all donor records?
- Can we export recurring-gift information?
- What happens to recurring gifts if we leave?
- Who legally controls the donor data?
- Which integrations are included?
- Can the system sync with our accounting software?
- Can duplicate households and donor records be merged?
About Support and Implementation
- Who handles data migration?
- How long does implementation normally take?
- What training is included?
- Is live support included?
- Are support levels different by plan?
- Who helps resolve processing or deposit problems?
Who Is Pushpay Best For?
Pushpay may be a strong option when your church:
- Receives substantial online giving
- Has a large congregation
- Wants a polished mobile giving experience
- Places a high priority on recurring gifts
- Needs strong giving reports and donor information
- Wants giving connected to broader engagement tools
- Has staff available to manage the platform
- Can justify a premium software investment
- Wants a custom church app
- Is willing to enter a longer-term agreement
Who Should Consider Other Options?
Your church should compare alternatives when it:
- Has a limited technology budget
- Needs only a simple donation page
- Wants published, transparent pricing
- Prefers month-to-month software
- Has a small administrative team
- Does not need a church app
- Already uses other systems for membership and communication
- Wants the lowest possible platform cost
- Is uncomfortable with a longer contract
- Cannot clearly explain how the additional features will be used
Pushpay Alternatives to Compare
The right alternative depends on what your church needs.
Platforms worth comparing may include:
Planning Center Giving
Planning Center may be attractive to churches already using Planning Center People, Services, Groups, Check-Ins, or Registrations.
Its modular structure allows churches to select the tools they actually need.
Tithely
Tithely offers giving, church management, apps, websites, messaging, and other church technology products.
It may appeal to churches wanting a broad set of options at a different price point.
Subsplash
Subsplash is often considered by churches that place a high priority on media, mobile apps, streaming, and congregation engagement.
Breeze
Breeze may be a better fit for smaller churches that value simplicity and do not need a highly complex system.
ChurchTrac
ChurchTrac offers church management and giving tools that may work well for budget-conscious small and midsized churches.
Ministry-Focused Fundraising Platforms
Churches with advanced fundraising needs may also want to evaluate platforms that focus more heavily on donor development, campaign communication, and fundraising automation rather than general church management.
The goal is not to find the platform with the most features.
The goal is to find the platform that best supports your church’s generosity strategy.
How to Decide Whether Pushpay Is Worth It
There is a simple mistake churches make when evaluating giving software.
They focus almost entirely on processing fees.
Processing fees matter, but they are only one part of the decision.
Imagine that one platform costs your church $5,000 more each year but helps generate $50,000 in additional recurring giving. That may be an excellent investment.
Now imagine that the platform costs $5,000 more and produces no measurable difference in giving, retention, communication, or staff efficiency. In that case, the church may simply be paying for unused features.
Evaluate Pushpay based on its total impact.
Ask whether it helps your church:
- Attract first-time donors
- Convert occasional donors into recurring donors
- Retain existing donors
- Recover failed recurring gifts
- Communicate more effectively
- Reduce administrative work
- Improve financial reporting
- Understand donor behavior
- Replace other software expenses
- Create a better mobile experience
The cheapest giving platform is not automatically the best value.
The most expensive giving platform is not automatically the most effective.
My Final Pushpay Review
Pushpay is a strong digital giving platform with an excellent mobile donor experience.
It can be particularly effective for larger churches that prioritize recurring giving, professional branding, donor reporting, and an integrated church technology ecosystem.
Its greatest strengths are its polished giving process, mobile experience, recurring-gift capabilities, and familiarity with the needs of churches.
Its greatest concern is cost.
A church should not purchase Pushpay merely because it is popular or because another large church uses it.
The decision should be based on your church’s giving volume, staffing, technology strategy, fundraising goals, and ability to use the platform effectively.
Pushpay may be worth the investment when the church fully uses what it is buying.
It may be unnecessarily expensive when the church only needs a basic giving form.
The right question is not simply, “How much does Pushpay cost?”
The better question is:
What measurable ministry and fundraising value will Pushpay provide our church?
