Tithe.ly Review for Churches

Affordable Church Giving or Hidden Costs?

Tithely has become one of the best-known online giving platforms for churches.

Its original offer was simple and compelling: churches could begin accepting online donations without paying a monthly subscription fee.

That made Tithely especially attractive to small and midsized churches that wanted to add digital giving without making a large software investment.

But Tithely is no longer merely an online donation form.

Today, it offers church management software, text messaging, websites, mobile apps, worship planning, event tools, people management, check-in, and other church technology products.

That raises two important questions:

Is Tithely still one of the most affordable giving platforms for churches?

And:

Does its growing collection of products make it a better value, or does it introduce costs and complexity that churches may not expect?

In the video below, I share the good, the bad, and several things churches should understand before choosing Tithely.

What Is Tithely?

Tithely is a church technology company best known for its online and mobile giving platform.

Churches can use Tithely to accept donations through several methods, including:

  • Website giving
  • Mobile giving
  • Recurring giving
  • Text giving
  • Giving through a church app
  • Kiosk giving
  • Administrator-entered donations
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Bank transfers

Tithely has also expanded into a broader collection of church tools, including:

  • Church management software
  • Member and household records
  • Children’s check-in
  • Volunteer management
  • Groups
  • Event registration
  • Email and text communication
  • Church websites
  • Custom church apps
  • Worship planning
  • Background-check integration

A church can use only Tithely Giving or purchase additional products individually. Tithely also offers an All Access package that combines many of its church technology products.

What Tithely Does Well

Churches Can Start Without a Monthly Giving Fee

The absence of a required monthly subscription for basic Tithely Giving is one of the platform’s biggest selling points.

This lowers the barrier for a small church that wants to begin accepting online donations.

A church does not necessarily have to make a large financial commitment, purchase an entire church management system, or sign up for an expensive mobile app just to place a giving form on its website.

Instead, the church pays transaction fees when donations are processed.

That can be appealing when:

  • The church is beginning digital giving
  • Online giving volume is relatively low
  • The church has a limited technology budget
  • Leaders are uncertain how many people will give online
  • The church does not need a complete technology platform

However, “no monthly fee” does not mean “no cost.”

The transaction fees still matter, especially as giving volume increases.

The Donor Experience Is Relatively Simple

Tithely provides a clean and generally straightforward donation process.

Donors can choose a fund, enter an amount, select whether the gift should repeat, provide payment information, and complete the donation from a phone or computer.

For returning donors, the process can become even faster.

This matters because online giving forms should remove unnecessary friction.

Every additional page, confusing instruction, required field, or unexpected step gives the donor another opportunity to abandon the gift.

Tithely’s giving experience is designed to make completing a donation reasonably easy.

Tithely Supports Several Ways to Give

Different donors prefer different methods.

Some will give through the church website. Others may prefer an app, a text message, or a recurring transaction they establish once and rarely revisit.

Tithely supports several giving channels within the same ecosystem.

This gives churches flexibility without requiring a separate provider for every method.

However, churches should not assume that offering more methods will automatically increase generosity.

The platform still needs to be supported by clear communication, good website placement, donor follow-up, and a healthy generosity strategy.

Recurring Giving Is Easy to Establish

Recurring giving can provide greater financial consistency for a church.

It helps reduce the effect of vacations, missed services, weather, seasonal attendance changes, and other disruptions.

Tithely makes it relatively easy for donors to turn a one-time gift into a repeating donation.

Churches should make recurring giving available, but they should avoid making donors feel manipulated.

A good giving platform presents the choice clearly and allows donors to manage or cancel their gifts without unnecessary difficulty.

Donors Can Cover Transaction Fees

Tithely allows churches to give donors the option of adding an additional amount to help cover processing costs.

This feature can reduce the amount the church loses to transaction fees.

Many donors are willing to cover the fee when the option is clearly explained and presented as voluntary.

However, churches should not confuse the amount donors add with a reduction in the processor’s actual fee.

The transaction fee is still charged. The donor is simply increasing the gift to help offset it.

The church should also work with its accountant to make sure the full donation is recorded and acknowledged correctly.

The Platform Can Grow With a Church

A church may begin with only online giving and later add:

  • Church management
  • A website
  • Text communication
  • A mobile app
  • Event tools
  • Worship planning
  • People and group management

This creates a possible growth path without moving immediately to another company.

For churches that want several connected tools, Tithely’s broader platform may offer meaningful value.

For churches that already have strong systems for membership, websites, apps, email, and worship planning, the additional products may be unnecessary.

What Churches May Not Like About Tithely

Transaction Fees Can Become Expensive

Tithely’s free giving plan has no required monthly subscription, but donations are still subject to processing fees.

This pricing model can be attractive for a church with limited online giving.

As donation volume grows, however, transaction fees can become a significant expense.

For example, a small percentage difference may not appear important on a $50 gift. Across hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in annual giving, the difference can become substantial.

Churches should calculate their effective annual cost rather than focusing only on the words “free giving.”

Review:

  • Total online gifts
  • Credit and debit card volume
  • ACH volume
  • American Express volume
  • Average gift amount
  • Percentage of donors covering fees
  • Monthly platform charges
  • Costs for additional Tithely products

Then compare the total with competing providers.

“Free” Can Be Misleading

Tithely is not wrong to describe its basic giving product as having no monthly subscription.

But church leaders may hear “free” and assume the platform costs the church nothing.

That is not necessarily true.

The church may still pay:

  • Card-processing fees
  • ACH fees
  • Text-giving costs
  • Mobile app subscriptions
  • Website subscriptions
  • Church management subscriptions
  • Messaging or communication expenses
  • Other optional product costs

Tithely can still be affordable, but churches should evaluate the entire relationship rather than one headline.

The Growing Product Suite Can Be Confusing

Tithely has expanded through product development and acquisitions.

That means churches may encounter different product names, dashboards, account experiences, and feature combinations.

The company has been working toward a more unified platform, but churches should still ask exactly which tools are included in their proposed package and how those tools work together.

Do not assume that every product shares one database perfectly merely because it carries the Tithely name.

During a demonstration, ask the salesperson to show the actual workflow between:

  • Giving and donor records
  • People and households
  • Groups
  • Events
  • Check-in
  • Email and text communication
  • The church app
  • The church website
  • Accounting software

A connected logo is not the same as a connected experience.

Customer Support Experiences Can Vary

Church technology companies serve thousands of organizations, and support quality can change over time.

Some churches report positive experiences. Others become frustrated by delayed replies, unresolved issues, or difficulty receiving help during a transition.

The quality of support matters because giving software handles money.

Before choosing a platform, ask:

  • Is telephone support available?
  • Is live chat available?
  • What hours is support staffed?
  • Is urgent payment support available?
  • Does our plan affect our support level?
  • Who handles failed deposits?
  • What happens if a donor is charged incorrectly?
  • How quickly are support requests normally answered?
  • Will we have implementation assistance?

Do not evaluate support only during the sales process. Sales responsiveness and customer-support responsiveness may be very different.

Additional Products May Not Be Best in Class

There is an appeal to purchasing giving, church management, a website, an app, communication, and worship tools from one provider.

It may reduce the number of companies the church manages.

But convenience does not automatically mean every tool is the best choice.

A church may prefer:

  • Tithely for giving
  • Planning Center for church management
  • WordPress for its website
  • Mailchimp or another provider for email
  • A dedicated text-messaging platform
  • A different app or media platform

There is no rule that every church tool must come from the same company.

The right question is whether the integrations, convenience, and potential savings outweigh the limitations of individual products.

How Much Does Tithely Cost?

Tithely’s basic giving product currently has no required monthly subscription.

The church pays processing fees when donations are completed.

Additional Tithely products may involve monthly fees, including church management, a website, text giving, and a custom mobile app.

Tithely also offers an All Access package that combines several products into one monthly subscription.

Because pricing and product bundles can change, churches should confirm current prices directly with Tithely before making a decision.

Ask for a written proposal that includes:

  • Monthly subscription fees
  • Card-processing rates
  • ACH rates
  • American Express rates
  • Text-giving expenses
  • Setup or implementation costs
  • Website charges
  • App charges
  • Messaging limits
  • Contract requirements
  • Renewal terms
  • Cancellation procedures
  • Data-export options

Do not choose a giving platform based only on a promotional monthly price.

Calculate the estimated total cost over at least one full year.

Tithely Giving Fee Example

Imagine that a church processes $500,000 per year in digital donations.

Even a small change in the effective processing rate can produce thousands of dollars in additional annual costs.

That does not automatically mean the lowest processing rate is the best choice.

A more expensive platform may create enough additional recurring giving, recover enough failed payments, or reduce enough staff work to justify the difference.

But the church should measure that value.

The evaluation should include:

Annual platform cost

Plus:

Estimated processing fees

Plus:

Staff and administration costs

Minus:

Additional gifts, recovered donations, and replaced software expenses

This gives the church a more honest picture than simply comparing advertised rates.

  • Value recurring giving
  • Have limited upfront technology funds
  • Want the option to add more church tools later
  • Prefer a church-focused provider
  • Want giving connected with a broader church platform
  • Need a website, app, or church management system
  • Are willing to calculate and monitor transaction costs

Who Should Compare Other Platforms?

A church should carefully compare alternatives when it:

  • Can negotiate lower processing rates elsewhere
  • Already has a strong church management system
  • Wants a more advanced donor-development platform
  • Needs highly customized reports

Tithely Alternatives

No giving platform is right for every church.

Depending on your needs, compare Tithely with:

Pushpay

Pushpay may appeal to larger churches that want a polished giving experience, recurring-giving tools, a church app, and a broader engagement platform.

It is generally positioned as a premium option and may require a larger financial commitment.

Planning Center Giving

Planning Center Giving may be a natural choice for churches already using Planning Center People, Services, Groups, Check-Ins, or Registrations.

Its connected Church Center experience can be a major advantage.

Subsplash Giving

Subsplash may be worth considering when the church places a high priority on its mobile app, sermons, media, streaming, and congregation engagement.

Breeze

Breeze has historically appealed to small and midsized churches that want church management software that is relatively easy to understand.

Churches should now examine how Breeze fits into Tithely’s larger product direction.

Givelify

Givelify focuses heavily on mobile giving and donor convenience.

It may appeal to churches that want a recognizable giving app and a relatively simple setup.

Donorbox

Donorbox serves churches and nonprofits and may be appropriate for organizations needing donation forms, campaigns, recurring gifts, and fundraising pages without a complete church management system.

My Final Tithely Review

Tithely remains one of the easiest ways for a church to begin accepting online donations without paying a required monthly fee for the basic giving product.

That makes it especially attractive to small churches, new churches, and ministries that are uncertain how much digital giving they will receive.

Its strengths include:

  • A relatively simple giving experience
  • Multiple giving methods
  • Recurring donations
  • Optional fee coverage
  • Church-focused features
  • A growing collection of connected products
  • A lower barrier to entry than many premium platforms

Its biggest weakness is that the word “free” can distract churches from calculating their actual costs.

Transaction fees add up.

Optional products add monthly expenses.

And as the company’s platform grows, churches must make sure the tools they purchase actually work together in the way they expect.

Tithely may be a very good value for a church that uses the platform intentionally.

It may become expensive for a church processing a large volume of online gifts or paying for several additional tools it barely uses.

The right question is not:

“Does Tithely charge a monthly fee?”

The better question is:

“What will Tithely cost our church in total, and will it help us create a better donor experience and fund more ministry?”

Need Help Evaluating Your Church Giving Platform?

Online giving software should do more than process a transaction.

It should make generosity easy, support recurring giving, provide useful information, reduce administrative work, and help the church fund its mission.
